I also began early, in 1983-4, and I had what amounted to a 'Longs
Electronics special'... a hand crank fiberglass 10 footer.  You were
not alone in your midnight cranking. (hihi)

My first receiver was a crude KLM, which mated to the converter
(Attached to the pipe) which then went to the LNA.  My rating on that
LNA was a spectacular 100!

2nd dish was a wire mesh.  A dish sold thru, of all places, SAM's.
That one suffered fatique. I should have stuck with dish #1.

3rd dish was perf aluminum, a Winegard 10 footer, which I have today.
