My guess would be possibly the battery - but more likely dried up capacitors in the power supply or reset circuit on the microprocessor. Any time you do a master reset, it will wipe out all of the customer settings.
As for the satellite mapping, if you can fix the reset issue, then just add the sats manually and they should retain their information until the next master reset.
