Consider DataStage (TM), which sells at over $100K.  First released in 1997.
It uses the MV model to store complex objects (collections of collections).
The reason they've stuck with this form is it's so easy to do.
When one normalizes the six main design-time tables in the DataStage repository, one 
ends up with 27 tables with up to nine key columns!
