Fair comment and you're absolutely right that this will avoid the problem.
It occurs (I think) because although you can express every integer within
the allowable range precisely in binary, you cannot do the same with every
fraction of an integer (what's the word I'm looking for ?).
So, if you convert all your numbers to integers you'll be Ok.

On the other hand, you do need to be pretty sure of the format of the
numbers you're working with, and be fairly sure you've either got all your
calculations in one place or you won't want to change the format in future.

In this case we weren't sure of either :-)

I would always use numbers converted to internal format
when doing financial calculation. We have never ever experienced this
problem, and we do have heavy financial calculations.
