Found the cause of problem.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. 

Brian  - you got me on the right track with your suggestion in #4 below - 'Is DC
chewing up CP or fighting for resource with (library/socket/spyware scanner
issues?).

The cause of the problem was the firewall software - ZoneAlarm - that is running
on the server and all client/workstations.

Shutdown ZoneAlarm and DC response is excellent.

So, now I wonder WHY - what is it about ZoneAlarm and/or other firewall software
that might cause this degredation in performance of DC?
