Not sure if you got a response to this (I didn't see one), but my
understanding is that a network error means that a socket connection
was originally successful, but before the transaction could be
completed the connection was dropped.  When I've seen this error it
usually means the server dropped the connection when the client was
expecting a response, or there's a faulty piece of gear somewhere
between here and there.

We used to see this regularly with Paymentech; every now and again
their server would just stop behaving normally and once they reset the
port, it'd all come back fine.  The conversation wasn not via http,
but the principle is still the same.
