John Smith is logged in over the internet, therefore he shows up with the address assigned to his router (if he has one). His address may be either (a) the IP assigned to him by his ISP, or (b) he may be assigned a NAT'd address by his ISP and it's the address of the ISP's router. >From the evidence you've provided, everything is working as it should...
