I was going to do something like that. I thought if there was an inline
method, it would be more efficient

You could write a very short program to do it, then execute that. 
Write the record and a return value to an @variable, something like...

PROGRAM READFILE
Get(Arg.) FileName Else STOP
Get(Arg.) ItemName Else STOP
Get(Arg.) FieldNo Else FieldNo = 0
@USER0 = ""
@SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE = @False
Open FileName To FL Then
   Read Rec From  FL, ItemName Then
    IF FieldNo Then
      @USER0 = Rec<FieldNo>
    End Else
      @USER0 = Rec
    End
    @SYSTEM.RETURN.CODE = @True
   End
End

STOP

Not sure why you would need to, though?
