Marc, W2K8 is much, Much, MUCH more than just Vista (which is, at the end of the day, a workstation OS) - this is the "Longhorn" server release that has been coming (just around the corner) sing W2k3 was released
Large swags of the OS have been totally rewritten, with greater modularization offered in terms of capabilities that you "plug in" as required. You can get rid of the "bloatware" with "Server Core", which offers a command line rather than a GUI (closest you get is notepad!!) W2K8 will be a great virtualization platform, especially in 64 bit, now that it provides up to 4-way SMP support for virtual machines (still in Beta for 6 months, but seems very stable so far). We have had various Beta's running inhouse for around 9 months, and have had no real complaints running just as a "dumb server", although there ARE compatability issues with some products (no surprise, and firing up a W2K3 virtual is trivial to by-pass these issues is a reasonable response I think) If you DO have Vista clients, there are some nice "tweaks" at the TCP level that can give a nice performance boost, and if you have the budget you can plug in some high-end network cards that can run the entire TCP/IP stack for you, so your CPU cycles are spent doing "real work" There is a lot of info on Microsoft site if you are "really" interested, and I think that if IBM are only going to target 64bit version I think that is a good thing (massive file sizes and the "standard" x64 edition supports up to 32Gb RAM & 4 cpu "sockets" [=16 cores now, 24 when intel release 6 core CPU's) Ross Ferris Stamina Software Visage > Better by Design! >-----Original Message----- >From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:owner-u2- >[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Marc Harbeson >Sent: Thursday, 13 March 2008 5:16 AM >To: [email protected] >Subject: RE: [U2] U2 and winserver 2008 > >I thought 2008 was mostly Vista SP1 deep down underneath all the Aero >fluff. ------- u2-users mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe please visit http://listserver.u2ug.org/
