Is anyone running Unidata (+ SB+) on a virtualized server, i.e. VMWare? If so, what considerations and concerns are there in this environment that are different from a dedicated Unidata server?
Several Datatel clients (including Hampshire) have virtualized. The primary concern with virtualization is performance - depending on your virtualization software, you might take a 5% to 20% hit in performance, but a lot depends on hardward and software interaction. So if you're on an aging server or experience terribly high volume (eg: web app) you might want to run some tests with a virtualized setup to ensure that your not adversely affecting performance.
Of course, from a DR point of view, virtualization is a no brainer. If you have the file system on a replicated SAN, and then the application on a replicated virtualized server with automatic failover you're as close to bullet proof as you can get these days. Typically a machine failure can rollover to another virtualized server in 5-15 seconds. End users will notice the brief hit, but you'll be up an running.
