This comes from the PICK days where code had a 32k limit. I still code using it this way ( old habits are hard to break )

Except you've just given me a statement, and I was talking about the function :-) The syntax is something like LOCATE(A,B,1;C) although as I said, I might have got the wrong function. I never used it if I could avoid it (almost all the time), and swore when I had to deal with someone else's use of it.
