I use Symbol Scanners.  You can run telnet sessions directly with vt220 or
HP emulation built in.  The emulation software is in cmos so a battery dying
is no longer an issue and the current models use Lithium Ion batteries so as
not to have a memory.  The only drawback over the WaveLink approach of some
years ago is that each device uses a uv license.  The WaveLink product Now
sold by JBA in Canada uses phantoms for all except the first process.
