I've yet to be convinced that there's much of consequence to be lost,
given the venue and subject matter.

Agreed, not much is likely to be lost; but neither is it going to be the
"lions' mouth" that you were so optimistic about earlier.

And, of course, Mark is right - there's an opportunity cost. We could have
had a talk about a technology - any technology - rather than a company.
Since when are LUG talks titled by company rather than technology/project,
anyway?

You've made your concerns and disinterest clear. Given that you're not even
in Sydney, and that SLUG is going ahead with it anyway, I'm not sure you are
going to achieve anything through repetitive negativity and argumentation.

After reading most (but not all) of this thread I feel some maybe missing the point.

It is not just a chance for getting answers out of MS, it is a chance to show MS that the community if not a bunch of anti-capitalist tree hugging hippy's that MS likes to make it out to be.

We should try to portray am image of intelligent hard working users and developers. A lot of people still think Linux is for geeks, it isn't, and its time to show MS that they cannot keep perpetuating the myth.

Asking a lot of esoteric technical questions about OOXML interoperability and such will just help them. So will attacking the monopoly that MS is. Perhaps we need to include some real "User" questions. Like why are Vista and Office 2007 so expensive? Why should I have to spend so much to upgrade my PC to install Vista and Office 2007 when Ubuntu will run just fine on my current PC? If Piracy is so bad to MS how is it that MS is still one of the richest Companies in the world? Why do I get the feeling that I am a criminal when I sit and try to understand MS Licenses?

Just a thought......

Randall.
