I have a x86 computer and I have a problem with my Nvidia graphics driver too.
I upgraded from 8.04 to 8.10 beta (in 10/10/2008)
in 8.04 I was using the driver without problem.

when I upgraded, I had a proposition to activate one of two drivers:
  - the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 71)
  - the NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)[Recommended]
I tried many times to activate one of the two drivers without success: it
download and install the driver but still not activated.

In every boot now I have a message box saying impossible to use right
parameter and propose 3 choices: use low graphic, try to do a new
parameter and backup old parameter. only the low graphic option work.
