No, all that completely makes sense. In fact, I haven't had to bother with my xorg.conf file in a while, so I don't know when this particular regression (if that's what it is) occurred.
Also, it appears that I do not actually need to include the information concerning my Nvidia card in xorg.conf, as the original problematic file did not include that info, and I was having no trouble whatsoever with the graphical aspect of X. So apparently xorg.conf does indeed have better hot-pluggable device support.
