The above statement is certainly incorrect:
"network-manager in intrepid does not support /etc/network/interfaces 
configuration."

The ifupdown plugin does support interfaces in /etc/network/interfaces,
it just does not support mapping stanzas properly. As
/etc/init.d/networking is run before /etc/init.d/NetworkManager, it is
not really relevant, whether both exist or not, and the ifupdown plugin
can be configured to leave certain interfaces alone.
