The xorg.conf file is below.
The issue with the icon is that I finally left it checked to see the
effect when the daemon restarts - on each crash the restart showed the
icon, this implies that on a re-start of the daemon the gnome screen
resolution was invoked - hence the conflict and resulting crash?
I also found, last night, that under 'Appearance Preferences' 'visual
effects' that none of the radio buttons was selected.
On clicking on 'extra' nothing appeared to happen - so I went to 'none'
which resulted in a change and then back to 'extra' which then worked
- full wobbling windows etc. - an interesting by-product was that the
'theme' changed from 'Human' to 'Glossy' on changing to 'extra'
This suggests, to me. more complex interactions, so I am now running
with the daemon without invoking Gnome Screen Resolution (GSR) - I
checked that GSR still caused conflict by effecting a change (just
ticking and unticking the icon) and sure enough any change in Nvidia X
server settings cause an immediate crash.
I have fully checked RAM and disks and ran 64Studio (I have multiple OS)
for 15 hours - it was rock solid) - so there are no hardware issues.
