I'm getting the same problem as this, being caused by the .thumbnails
folder.  I've got thousands of images archived for storage and recently
extracted them.  This caused nautilus to use up 100% cpu even when all
folders are closed.  The only thing I can do is delete .thumbnails and
nautilus behaves again.

Is there a setting somewhere to stop it generating thumbnails when I
don't want it to?
