Ok, the above files are for running the command on 8.10 from harddisk as
root. What we have so far: this problem is identical for 8.10 and 9.04
and happens from live-cd as well as from a version on harddisk, fully
updated. I think it disappears when running: dpkg-reconfigure -aup low
and it never reoccurs again after this, I will try to verify this after
obtaining a backtrace. In the meantime nano works just fine as an
alternative and gdb has limited output, but indicates a display problem.
Next step: command as user.
