Do you think that orbnauticus' screnshot was taken from gnome or xfce? (It's the 3rd comment, and I think that should be xfce!) Adam's screenshot is very different from yours, it seems he is using gnome, and it looks like that his problem is not related to the icon of update-manager, which fits the panel, but the other icons, which are too small. In the meantime I'm downloading and installing xfce, in order to try to reproduce your issue!
