So, I tried the same cd on a different (older) optiplex machine, and it boots up fine. So I'm convinced that the issue is an incompatiblity with the Optiplex 960.

Status in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Tried to boot from Live-CD for Jaunty alpha-3 on a Dell Optiplex 960. The screen is black right after selecting try from CD. The keyboard is frozen as well, however, if I press the off button on the machine the Ubuntu splash screen appears, and the status indicator appears.
