Hmm, I must not be thinking straight - blame the flu, even if I'm almost
over it. :}  If it were *simply* a matter of authority, this wouldn't
explain the intermittent behavior.

For instance, now I'm running apt-get update (in gdb, but I need to go
back and build a non-stripped version, doh) with resolv.conf pointed at
my non-authoritative cache at 172.16.0.1 and, strangely enough, on this
run everything has resolved happily and fine.
