Yes, this /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness interface is there:
---
r...@fry:/proc/acpi/ibm# cat brightness
level:          15
commands:       up, down
commands:       level <level> (<level> is 0-15)
---

However, if use this interface there is no delay and the brightness
changes as I would hope/expect.

# echo "down" >brightness
# echo "up" >brightness
# echo "level 0" >brightness

These all work without a noticeable delay or problem.  Is there a way
for me to change the keys to use this interface in this way?

I can try this.  My main concern is that, at least without the
thinkpad_acpi option, "acpi_backlight=vendor" causes other problems on
my system such as strange pauses/hangs that last for several seconds
then go away.  Similar to the problem Alex Matveev posted above on
2009-02-16.
