I just tried rebooting with both the "acpi_backlight=vendor" kernel
option and the "thinkpad_acpi brightness_enable=1" option enabled.  With
this combination, I can adjust the brightness in what seems to be a
reasonable manner - the changes are quick and seem to cover the full
brightness range with 8 levels including the minimum and maximum
settings.  Checking /proc/acpi/ibm/brightness seems to confirm this.

With this combination I also do not seem to have the strange plugging
in/unplugging problem reported by Alex Matveev above and referenced in
my previous update on this bug.

Thank you for your help on this!  For what it is worth, during the
fairly brief time I tested the Jaunty beta I did not have this problem.
