Sounds, good. You are now in the same situation I was several days before. I 
don't know exactly what I did to fix it. I was trying to reduce power 
consumption on my laptop when it got fixed. 
Trying to reproduce and find the cure, I decided to reinstall, so I formated 
and installed 9.04 again. Since then I didn't have another crash and I'm trying 
to get my computer back to your situation to found that also compiz blacklisted 
my card. editing /usr/bin/compiz and removing the blacklist line solved it. 
also you could run with a terminal:
SKIP_CHECK=yes compiz &
I can remember also, that sysrq was not functioning either. something I fixed 
by doing -> /etx/X11/xorg.conf

Try that and use Alt-Fn-Del+k, then ctrl-alt-F1 to get to the console. I
got mine out of the freeze but unable to start X again.

I'm rebooting to try to find the root cause of this (or at least for it
to hang again).
