It seems that the problem is related to the way ubuntu is handling the
open/close button on the AcerTimeline. If I use this button to open the
drive, then the media is not mounted or not mounted properly.
However,

Recently (a week or so ago) I noticed in the upgrade list, a number of
glstreamer files.
After that upgrade I have been able to play dvd's and audio files with no
problems. I had posted this on the Ubuntu forums

HOWEVER, I was also given another fix to avoid using the open/close button
for the dvdrom drive. Instead, on the terminal I type the command "eject
cdrom".
