As I said, I'm keen on this not to happen automatically, or with
obfuscated words. It should say that there is a different program
"empathy" installed now, which has the same purpose, and offer to
remove either. Or, if that's easier, offer to remove pidgin if the
user confirms that he does not want to use it.

Could this have a check whether the program in question is currently
running?
