Thx Scott, it looks though as if my problem was solved. After using the startx command I cleaned out the HD, reinstalled G-P-M via synaptic and rebooted without a problem. (It looks as if the backup is being done to HD itself if the external disk is not mounted causing a space shortage which in turn may have caused the system to become unstable but I still need to verify if that indeed was the root cause.)
