theres a few logic problems with formtop (and maybe formleft?) in unit1.pas 
where its tested for >0 but hasnt been initialised so it should really have a 
value set before the if statement tries to get a value for it. but i think your 
right, its an issue of what relevant libraries ubuntu is using as compared to 
debian sid,i think we're using a higher version of gtk, and a lesser version of 
fpc, i think the problem lies somewhere in there. perhaps gtk 2.19 is doing 
something differently that lazarus doesnt expect.
if amd64 works and i386 doesnt, that does suggest to me is an underlying 
problem of the various things winff uses, so lazarus/fpc/gtk
