An experiment that would be interested in hearing the results of after
seeing that we default qemu devices to vesa in xorg-server instead of
cirrus even though we have the cirrus patch to work under qemu/KVM -
Can you try adding an /etc/X11/xorg.conf with this in it and restart X
and initiate gnome-screensaver to see if it handles SetGamma properly?
