@Robert: As I expected, adding the xorg.conf you specified didn't change anything as it was already being detected as cirrus.
I tried using the vmvga driver instead of the cirrus driver, and that made gnome-screensaver work properly. It would appear that the crash is related to some capability of the cirrus driver.
