As for Windows, there are MME, DirectSound, WDM, ASIO (and the seldom- used GSIF), kmixer, and the new low-latency things in Windows Vista/7 I don't know much about. Things are complicated there as well, but the Linux/Ubuntu audio stack is even more complex. Things are moving in the right direction though.
