How did you install the fglrx driver? The fglrx package distributed in
Ubuntu ships a blacklist for the radeon module by default. If you're
using the Ubuntu package, do you have /etc/modprobe.d/fglrx.conf on your
system?
The lack of graphical splash is bug #526892, which should be resolved
with the next upload of plymouth.
