If I remember correctly KDM was calling a long-gone X process (something that was running before the system was rebooted.) KDM was returning a meaningless error text because it could not talk to the long-gone process. Xinit had the same problem but returned a more helpful error message. I was hoping you might be able to improve the error message somehow.
