This bug is currently assigned to usplash; could we be clear about
which of the following areas ("please tick one or more") the blank
screen is appearing at:
(a) LiveCD boot menu
(b) usplash with bouncing progress bar (black background)
(c) GDM/KDM login (what initially pops up with username dialogue on installed
system)
(d) main X desktop (where GNOME or KDE desktop environment would be visible).
