Yes the update was performed through update-manager. The problem was resolved by manually reinstalling with Synaptic after rebooting into the new version. OpenOffice.org does function, however the automated upgrade seems to occur in the wrong order. It did refer earlier to a Python package not being configured prior to attempting the installation of the new OpenOffice.org.
