Where do I find how to *configure* the bootloader for use? Grub-PC is so
obscure that only the most dedicated would want to learn it.

It is not a requirement that you use Grub 2 (grub-pc), but if you remove
the

bootloader that was selected at install time in favor of another, you
have

to *configure* that bootloader for use. This wasn't done, so the grub
hook

can't do its job when a new kernel is installed and the only sensible
action

is to fail out.

Grub2 is the preferred bootloader because it's the only one for which

upstream development is ongoing.
