Thanks for the package hint. I'm pretty sure now that this bug is somewhere other than Movie Player. I believe that the real bug is in X-Windows, the video driver, or my systems video controller. I don't know how to narrow it down. Some applications seem to aggravate the problem more than others.
When the problem occurs, the windows disappear, the screen is blank perhaps with symmetric small lines, and the keyboard is unresponsive. The screen color varies, but is usually dark. When I reboot, there's nothing in the log files to indicate what happened. It happens with Firefox most often, but that's probably because it's used frequently. It seems to be sensitive to the sites visited. I use SeaMonkey for browsing more often because it seems to be less sensitive to the problem. If someone could help me in narrowing down the source of the bug, I'd appreciate it.
