Here is the deal, the problem involvedpulse audio. Shortly after posting
this bug, I tried to use alsamixer from the console, and that was able
to see the audio devices.
I also added the config file /etc/asound.conf found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio
Initially I tried to ensure that the permissions where set for my user
account 'gvl' (you see it above) for the 'audio' 'pulse' and 'pulse-
access'. I did this through GNOME's GUI based tool. For some reason I
discovered (after pulling some hair out) that the permissions did not
take, I am not sure why that is, and will investigate that. So I added
my user to the above groups from the command line, rebooted, and it
worked.
After this the devices showed up in the sound control, and pulseaudio
was controllable. The Vu meter for pulse audio displays moving bars when
music is playing. However NO sound comes out of the audio jack. Of
course this is annoying.
This machine sits in the basement of my house and is headless. It
functions as the router for several networks in my home and is both a
vpn host and client. The purpose of getting audio to work on the machine
is to have a sound server, and stream that sound to other machines on
the network.
So the next task here is, why is there no sound coming out from the
audio jacks? I have tried several of the built in audio devices to no
avail.
