Don, your patch is to update /usr/share/hplip/base/device.py from HPLIP 1.7.1 to 1.7.3. The 1.7.3 state the user already has. Do you perhaps mean that he should try to downgrade by applying the patch with "patch -R"?
This wouls help if the problems with the LJ1100 are really a regression between 1.7.1 and 1.7.3? Are they? Or not? Johan Kiviniemi, can you revert to HPLIP 1.7.1 as I described in my last point and check whether you have still the problems with the toolbox (points 3 and 6) and with the syslog warning (point 11 and 12)?
