If you set nautilus (the file browser) to open items with double clicks
instead of single click, you can open the Properties of the files with a
synthetic right click without opening the file. You can find the
corresponding settings in the Preferences of any file browser window.

Concerning the links in the browsers: you can open them in a new tab
with a left click while holding down the ctrl modifier.

If you are also using onboard, I would suggest to use one of the full
keyboard layouts. In fact, these layouts have a button that toggles left
and right mouse buttons for the next click that will be performed.
