** Summary changed:

- libxine crashes while playing mp3's in feisty apparently related to DPMS
+ kdesktop crashes

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: libxine1
+ I originally thought this had something to do with xine because having
+ amarok or kaffeine loaded seemed to expediate the crash, apparently that
+ was just chance for about 50 crashes I've had. Or somehow it did relate,
+ I don't know any more. I also thought it had something to do with the
+ screensaver and DPMS, but now I wouldn't even bet on that.

- Not really sure if this is xine or xine-ffmpeg, but since it seems to
- have to do with DPMS I think probably the core lib.
-
- Using kde with either amarok or kaffeine (xine in common) will cause a
- kdesktop crash some time after DPMS has turned off the screen.
-
- I have not been able to reproduce this with a perfect regularity, but 2
- things are required, dpms and xine libs.
-
- I assume it has something to do with xine's ability/feature to stop the
- screensaver while playing video, it must be doing something odd when it
- finds dpms running.
-
- I haven't had any luck debugging it any better, as when I run amarok or
- kaffeine in gdb or strace it doesn't happen any more, and my debugging C
- skills stop at dabbling.
-
- In kde kdesktop is the screensaver, so if xine does soemthing funky to
- it, that would explain my kdesktop crash.
+ Anyway, after leaving my computer running with kdesktop screensavers &
+ DPMS enabled (kdesktop has never crashed while I was using it actively)
+ I come back to a crashed kdesktop.
