I originally thought this had something to do with xine because having amarok 
or kaffeine loaded seemed to expediate the crash, apparently that was just 
chance for about 50 crashes I've had. Or somehow it did relate, I don't know 
any more. I also thought it had something to do with the screensaver and DPMS, 
but now I wouldn't even bet on that.
Anyway, after leaving my computer running with kdesktop screensavers & DPMS 
enabled (kdesktop has never crashed while I was using it actively) I come back 
to a crashed kdesktop.
