As a workaround, I can recommend LiveCD Parted Magic, distribution focused to disk manipulation. Gparted is the main application on the disk; it is ready to go distribution, it is easier to run gparted from PartedMagic LiveCD than to install some DEB packages to "broken" Ubuntu.
