tried again and it's still dying... looking at the logs it looks like dhclient does run at boot and gets an ip address, but then drops the lease and fails to renew. I saw a bunch of apparmour messages mixed in with the dhclient messages in syslog so I disabled apparmor from running and we'll see what that does... if anything.
