manufacturer always installs the same module.

Anyway, best do the most generic test next: Try with the newest daily
mainline kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/daily/ to see if the bug is already fixed upstream.
(currently 64-bit images are available for the newest daily, for 32-bit
the newest is the last natty)

I wonder if the bug is power saving related. Does it show only on
battery or also when plugged in?

Also, when frozen, can you shut down with AltGr+SysRq as described in
bug 662288 comment 5 (
