sorry for the long delay.  I have reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 with 2GB of
swap space and that has done the trick with resuming.  I am not sure if
an update fixed this, or just doubling the swap space took care of me...
but it is fixed.

As for the Ethernet this is not a ubuntu problem but an odd problem with
my specific model of macbook (the Ethernet does not work on either side
of my machine).  Thank you for your assistance.
