Seems I can reproduce something similar and break an otherwise
functioning oneiric system just by adding LVM into my setup.  If I
create a VG and LV using /dev/sda7 as the backing PV (the last partition
of a single-disk system), init-bottom hangs until udev kills '/sbin/lvm
vgscan; /sbin/lvm vgchange -a -y' due to timeout.  The root fileystem
ends up read only 3 of 5 boots.  Will try to gather more debugging info
and report here.
