Evan: The problem as I see it is that while we say it's not supported running as root, it doesn't work out of the box as non-root; it seems to me that one way or the other should work out of the box.
As to upstream saying running wireshark as root is a 'Bad Idea', I'd always assumed that was a security statement in that running it as a normal user was safer if examining non-trusted networks. Given that many people are just using it to watch packets going between local machines to diagnose stuff I don't think that reason for it being a 'Bad Idea' holds. This bug is kind of interesting - it's a fairly minor bug by symptom, but it's a regression.
