I tried another of my kubuntu-installs, and it behaves exactly identical:
The 'Ubuntu One' application starts the installer, waits for authentication,
and then advances the 'thermometer' to the right, where everything stalls. And
again, using a software center, a pop-up informs me that it is not working
(while sudo apt-get is fine - at any other time, of course, not at the same
time ;) ).

1. Why can I not install through a software center?

2. Why does the installer in this case not show the same pop-up that I
get on Software Center, informing me that another application is using
this?

So we could have to address two items here, eventually.
